There’s a lot of excitement about Deadpool 3 for many reasons. First, it marks the return of this raunchy yet loveable character to the big screen over five years after the last film. Then there’s the excitement of Deadpool officially joining the MCU. Finally, this film is the only Marvel movie coming in 2024. We obviously live in a world where leaks and spoilers pop up all the time, so it’s not shocking that there are unofficial snapshots of Deadpool 3 during filming. There are images on the internet to the chagrin of many who don’t wish to see unofficial photos that reveal possible plot points and new characters. One very important person who wants the Deadpool 3 photo leaks to stop is Ryan Reynolds, who released a statement about it on his Instagram page.

screen shot of statement by ryan reynolds about people showing leaked images from deadpool 3 set
Ryan Reynolds/Instagram

Here is a reader-friendly version of the statement for all:

“Surprises are part of the magic of theatrical movies. It is important for us to shoot the new Deadpool film in real, natural environments, using practical effects as opposed to making the movie indoors and digitally. Telephoto lenses continue to spoil surprises and create a difficult situation for everyone. Here’s hoping some of the websites and social channels hold back showing images before they’re ready. The film is built for audience joy—and our highest hope is to preserve as much of that magic as possible for the finished film and the big screen. Part of the reason people post spoilers is because they’re excited. I realize these aren’t real world issues and it’s firmly in the ‘good problems’ bucket. I love making this movie.”

Joy is something we all need and it is nice to go into something with fresh eyes. Knowing nothing only amps up the energy. Basically, spoilers suck for a lot of fellow fans. Ryan Reynolds makes lots of good and heartfelt points in his statement about Deadpool 3 leaks, indeed.

The actor did recently share a photo of him as Wade Wilson without that infamous mask. Yes, he still looks like an avocado or perhaps a n*tsack, depending on who you ask. The latter is even wilder with the dog licking the side of his face.

Deadpool 3 is coming our way on July 26, 2024. We know there will be plenty of wonderful clips, photos, and trailers coming in the near future. For now, this post will tell you everything you need to know about Deadpool 3.

Here is everything we know about the Deadpool and Wolverine reunion in Deadpool 3.

After years of speculating, in 2022, Marvel Studios confirmed that Deadpool would officially join the MCU for a third installment of the R-rated comic book franchise at the start of Phase Six. This would mark the first official character of the Fox X-Men universe joining the MCU (although Patrick Stewart as a variant Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness kinda counts too, we suppose).

Most recently, “Dogpool” shared a look at Ryan Reynold’s Wade Wilson without his mask in Deadpool 3. Of course, the true star of the show, Dogpool, is also present.

Here is everything we know so far about Deadpool 3.

Right now, everyone is calling the film Deadpool 3. However, for superpowered mercenary Wade Wilson’s first entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, at least the first official entry, we think they may choose to give it a more creative title.

Deadpool 3‘s Plot

The plot of Deadpool 3 remains a mystery. All we know is that Hugh Jackman is returning as Wolverine, and that it takes place before the feral X-Man’s death in Logan. In fact, Jackman has confirmed that time travel will be involved in the threequel in a big way.

As most folks know by now, Deadpool’s third solo film will reunite him with his X-Men Origins: Wolverine co-star. Deadpool and Wolverine will work together, although they have made it very clear that these two characters “hate each other.” It will not be a love-fest in this story. But the fact that Deadpool 3 is smack in the middle of the Multiverse Saga should give us all a clue as to what’s going to go down, and probable multiversal shenanigans will ensue.

Dogpool, of course, will also star.

Make sure to follow him on Instagram.

Deadpool 3‘s Cast

We know Hugh Jackman will return, along with the very obvious Ryan Reynolds. Here’s who else we know about: Karan Soni, cab driver Dopinder, Leslie Uggams, Emma Corrin, and Matthew Macfadyen. In exciting news, Morena Baccarin and Stefan Kapicic are reprising their roles as Vanessa and Colossus in Deadpool 3. So are Rob Delaney’s Peter, Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), and Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio). Jennifer Garner’s Elektra from the 2003 Daredevil Marvel Fox movie is also reported to reprise her role in this MCU film.

Deadpool 3‘s director for this third outing will be Shawn Levy, most recently known for his work on Stranger Things. This would be a reunion for Levy and Reynolds, as the pair previously worked together on the movie Free Guy. Levy is also known for the time travel movie The Adam Project.

On the writing side of things are Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, writers for the popular animated series Bob’s Burgers. The writers for the first two Deadpool films, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, are also contributing to the third film’s screenplay, as is Ryan Reynolds himself.

DEADPOOL 3 Gives Wolverine His Marvel Comics-Accurate Yellow Suit in the MCU https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-3-first-look-hugh-jackman-wolverine-costume-reveals-marvel-comics-accurate-yellow-suit/ Mon, 11 Sep 2023 15:03:00 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=953434 We have our first look at Wolverine's MCU costume from Deadpool 3; Hugh Jackman will be wearing a Marvel Comics' accurate yellow suit.

The MCU loves a yellow super suit. First, it gave Charlie Cox’s Daredevil his red and yellow outfit when he appeared on the Disney+ series, She-Hulk. And now, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have officially revealed what costume Wolverine will wear for his MCU debut. And no surprise, Deadpool 3 has opted to give Wolverine his bright yellow (and blue) suit, a costume pulled straight from the pages of Marvel Comics. Although Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has appeared on our movie screens many times, his yellow comics-accurate suit has not made the live-action jump… Until now. But a bright yellow suit on this extra grumpy version of Wolverine in Deadpool 3 seems exactly appropriate.

You can check out the first-look image of Wolverine’s MCU costume from Deadpool 3 below. Then, take a minute to fully appreciate the incredible yellow-ness of this suit.

First look at Hugh Jackman Wolverine MCU suit from Deadpool 3, his yellow costume form the comics in high quality.
Marvel Studios

We bet we’re going to hear Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool refer to Jackman’s Wolverine as “Sunshine” at least once in the movie, thanks to this costume. And, the yellow and red suits for these heroes might lead to some ketchup and mustard jokes in Deadpool 3, much to Wolverine’s annoyance. But Wolverine had to eventually suit up in the comics’ yellow and blue X-Men costume in a Marvel movie.

The Marvel Comics Origins of Wolverine’s Classic Costume, the Yellow and Blue Suit

So how did we arrive at this Deadpool 3 look for Wolverine? Wolverine made his debut in The Incredible Hulk #181 in 1974, wearing his classic yellow and blue costume. The mask was slightly different at first. But by the time the Canadian mutant became a part of the X-Men in Giant Size-X-Men #1 the following year, the classic yellow and blue suit as we know it was introduced, with the larger Wolverine mask. That look stuck until 1980, when Logan received his brown and tan suit. The second Wolverine costume lasted a decade, but he went back to his yellow and blue for the X-Men: The Animated Series era in 1992. This is likely why Wolverine’s yellow suit is seen as THE costume for a generation.

The history of Wolverine's comics costumes, from 1974 through to 2008.
Marvel Comics

If there’s a true direct from the comic books inspiration here, the Deadpool 3 costume looks the most like Wolverine’s in Astonishing X-Men, which ran from 2004-2008. The great John Cassaday designed that outfit. The biggest detail that doesn’t match up to the Astonishing X-Men look is that Wolverine now has sleeves instead of bare arms. Oh, and no mask that we can see yet. But we expect that’s coming. You simply can’t have a complete classic yellow Wolverine costume without the mask, right?

Deadpool 3 Brings Us This Iconic Look in Hugh Jackman’s Potentially Final Turn as Wolverine

Fans have long-clamored to see this classic-colored costume on the hero. And the MCU loves to deliver an Easter egg if it can. As mentioned, yellow might seem an odd color for the hero known for being a bit of a grump. But, although Wolverine has worn many different costumes in his long Marvel Comics’ career, his suits have more often than not included yellow in them. It seems like Hugh Jackman had to don the color as Wolverine at least once before he hung up his claws.

Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy shared more about Wolverine’s potential final turn on screen and bringing the yellow suit to life. He noted, “Like the rest of the world, I’ve waited two decades to see Wolverine in a whole movie with Deadpool, and I don’t know if this is our last shot at Wolverine on screen, so I was going to make goddamned sure we get the old yellow and blue just once, and that we get it right.”

And, in order to do that, Wolverine’s yellow costume went through “multiple, multiple, multiple iterations and fittings.” But Levy adds, “It also helps that I’m making this movie within the MCU, so I have access to an army of the nerdiest nerds available to a Marvel project.”

Could This Be Hugh Jackman’s Final Outing as Wolverine?

Before Deadpool 3 became a reality, Hugh Jackman said his Wolverine days had ended, and he would not play the character again. Of course, we can never say never, but those previous pronouncements make it likely the actor will be done with the role of Wolverine, yellow suit or otherwise, after the Deadpool movie. If this is indeed Hugh Jackman’s last time as the hero, then it’s fitting to end it on this classic note. Finally, we will see Wolverine, as we’ve come to know him, in the costume we most associate with the role.

Marvel Studios had slated Deadpool 3 to release on May 3, 2024. But we may see a shift in that release date depending on when the studios agree to fair compensation and support for their writers and actors.

It’s official! After 23 years, Hugh Jackman will finally wear his comics-accurate costume in Deadpool 3. Although the first X-Men movie made a snarky remark about yellow spandex costumes, fans have waited forever to see Logan in the world-famous outfit on-screen. But with news of Jennifer Garner’s Elektra joining the cast as well, it seems likely that the Marvel Multiverse rumors about Deadpool 3 are true. We can’t confirm anything, but we would not be shocked if several of the Fox-era X-Men appear in this film alongside Logan. And if they do, the X-Men deserve comic book-style costume upgrades too, to properly pay homage to their Marvel Comics origins. But which X-Men comic costumes should appear in the MCU’s world? And just how comics-accurate should these costumes be? Here are the X-Men we’d love to see in the MCU and the suits and costumes we’d love to see them wear.

Cyclops’ Blue and Yellow Costume Should Join Wolverine’s Suit in Deadpool 3

The Cyclops costume designed by Jim Lee in 1991, and the one worn briefly in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse by actor Tye Sheridan. We'd love to see this Marvel comics accurate X-Men costume in the MCU.
Marvel Comics/20th Century Fox

Scott Summers, the X-Men member whom you may know as Cyclops, has had literally dozens of costumes in the comics. While we love Cyclops’ ‘70s/’80s blue costume, with the skullcap and the pirate boots, we believe it would be a hard one to pull off on screen in the MCU. For many, his most iconic costume is his ‘90s Jim Lee-designed one, used in X-Men: The Animated Series. We almost got a version of this costume in a Marvel movie, as it was teased for a moment at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse. Of course, by the time of the next film, Dark Phoenix, Cyclops was wearing yet another suit. If James Marsden shows as up as Cyclops in Deadpool 3 or Secret Wars, we think a proper version of his ‘90s X-Men costume is in order for the MCU. Although with a more accurate color scheme than the X-Men: Apocalypse one that Tye Sheridan wore. That’s a good place to start.

We’d Love for Storm’s Epic Cape to Take Flight in the MCU

Storm's early 90s comic look, designed by Jim Lee, and Halle Berry as Storm in the first X-Men film.
Marvel Comics/20th Century Fox

For all of the major diversions costume-wise in the first X-Men movie, the costume worn by Halle Berry as Storm is pretty close to what the Marvel Comics presented. (That first wig, though? That’s another story). While we are partial to Ororo Munroe’s original costume designed by Dave Cockrum, we do think it would be hard to justify the headpiece, leather swimwear, and thigh-high boots in live-action. But Storm’s ‘90s look, designed by Jim Lee, is perfect to wear on screen. This costume is very similar to the first X-Men movie costume, only this time, we would want the MCU’s version to have yellow accents and the red X symbol on the shoulders. Sometimes in the comics, this costume looks like black leather, sometimes, it’s all white. We’d happily take either one.

Magnetos Purple and Red Costume Needs to Make an On-Screen Appearance

Ian McKellen as Magneto in the first X-Men film, the Jim Lee version of comics Magneto, and Michael Fassbender as the character in X-Men: First Class. We'd love to see this Marvel comics accurate X-Men costume in the MCU.
20th Century Fox/Marvel Comics

Magneto has one of the best costumes in comics. When Jack Kirby nailed a design, he really nailed it. That’s why Mags had so few costume changes over the interceding decades. But the movies always shied away from going full comics look when it came to the Master of Magnetism’s costume. The closest we ever got in terms of Marvel Comics’ accuracy was the costume at the very end of X-Men: First Class, where Michael Fassbender’s Magneto sported the classic comics helmet and his purple and maroon color scheme. But that was all done away with in the next film, X-Men: Days of Future Past. If Ian McKellen or Michael Fassbender do return in Deadpool 3, then let’s go full Kirby. Okay, maybe without the trunks. But the rest of it? Let’s go. It’s time to give Magneto the costume he deserves in the MCU.

Rogue’s Classic Marvel Comics Yellow and Green Suit Would Make a Splash

Rogue in her '90s Jim Lee era costume from the comics and the animated series, and Anna Paquin as Rogue from the X-Men films. We'd love to see a comics-accurate costume on Rogue in the MCU.
Marvel Comics/20th Century Fox

Anna Paquin’s Rogue was perhaps the most different characterization from her comic book counterpart. She was very shy and unsure of her powers, a far cry from the version most fans knew from the ‘90s X-Men cartoon series. We’ve heard that version described as “Dolly Parton, with the powers of Superman.” And that’s accurate. Rogue has had many costumes in Marvel Comics, most of them green and white. But If Paquin returns, now all grown up, we’d love to see her in the Jim Lee-designed costume from X-Men #1, later made famous by the animated show. It’s really Rogue’s best costume, the bomber jacket just works so well with the suit. This comics-accurate costume is easily translatable to the screen with very few tweaks, and we’d love to see it add a splash of color to the MCU’s X-Men lineup. We’re ready to see this Rogue costume in live-action, sugah.

Colossus’s Bodysuit Is the X-Men Costume the MCU Deserves

Colossus in his early 90s X-Men costume, his 2000s era comics look, and in the Deadpool films.
Marvel Comics/20th Century Fox

Piotr Rasputin, the X-Men’s Russian metal man Colossus, has been a key figure in the Deadpool movies, and is confirmed to return for the third film. As much as we love Stefan Kapičić in the role, that black and red costume is just not very Colossus to us. In Marvel’s X-Men comics and others, Colossus wore a red and yellow costume for much of the ‘70s and ‘80s, with big shoulder flares and thigh-high boots. That was later streamlined by Jim Lee in the ‘90s. Maybe the best version of the Colossus costume was from the Astonishing X-Men series of the 2000s. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine costume seems inspired by Astonishing, so why not Colossus’ suit? We just know it’s time for Piotr to wear the red and yellow. We’d probably give the big lug some pants, though.

Phoenixs Firebird Emblem Should Rise On-Screen

Famke Jannsen in X-Men: The Last Stand, and Jean Grey in the pages of New X-Men. We'd love to see this Marvel Comics-accurate costume in the MCU.
20th Century Fox/Marvel Comics

Jean Grey has been a part of the X-Men since the very first issue in 1963, and has had dozens of costumes since then. Some are iconic, others are fashion nightmares. But while we’ve lobbied hard for the Jim Lee ‘90s costume designs for any possible X-Men returning in the MCU, Jean Grey’s outfit from this era is not a favorite. The shoulder pad armor, the headpiece, the padding on the legs? It’s all too busy. Maybe the MCU could pull off a version of this X-Men costume that works. But we’d prefer something that evokes Jean as Phoenix.

Of course, that means the classic firebird emblem, in yellow and green. We realize the classic Phoenix costume might be hard to pull off in live-action. It would be hard to justify those opera gloves, thigh-high boots, and gold sash. But in the mid-2000s, Jean wore a more practical version of the Phoenix red and green, which could work on screen. With two movies dedicated to Jean Grey not being able to control the Phoenix Force, it would be fun to see Famke Janssen totally in control of her powers in the MCU, and wearing something resembling her New X-Men-era costume.

Mystique’s Comics-Accurate White Dress Is a Costume Long Overdue for Its Debut

Mystique, as played by Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Laawrence, and the comic book Mystique
20th Century Fox/Marvel Comics

Mystique has been an iconic part of the X-Men film franchise since the very first film in 2000. She’s been played by Rebecca Romijn, and later, Jennifer Lawrence. But we think if Magneto returns, then Mystique should be right by his side. And if it’s Ian McKellen’s Magneto, then the original Mystique, Rebecca Romijn, should join him. Rebecca Romijn is currently killing it as Number One on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. And while we think at this point in her career, she probably doesn’t want to spend hours in the makeup chair being painted head-to-toe blue, she doesn’t need to. Because Marvel Comics’ Mystique wore clothes. We’d love to see Mystique’s iconic white costume from the comics appear in the MCU, with the tiny gold skulls. We got a tease of this comics-accurate costume in X-Men: Apocalypse, but the later movies never delivered. This one’s long overdue.

Disney and Deadpool are an interesting match. And many people have been eagerly following Deadpool 3 news to better understand how the Disney-owned Marvel Studios and the previously Fox Entertainment Group’s Deadpool might come together. In previous, Kevin Feige promised that Deadpool 3 would be an MCU movie and that it would remain R-rated, a first for the franchise. And now, we get our first look at this odd-couple pairing. But it comes with an even odder, more exciting couple. Welcome, Deadpool, to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And in the same breath, welcome, Wolverine, to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And surprise, welcome Hugh Jackman as Wolverine to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Deadpool 3.

If you’re wondering what this means for Logan and Wolverine’s big screen continuity, though, don’t worry, they have answers. Sort of.

Yep, that’s right. What starts as just a casual video from Ryan Reynolds becomes so much more. Because we are getting our MCU Wolverine, baby. And that MCU Wolverine is going to be Hugh Jackman in Deadpool 3. For so long, everyone has been asking, who will play the MCU’s Wolverine? So, of course, the MCU had to answer with the most obvious answer that no one expected to hear. We don’t know if Jackman intends to continue to be the MCU’s Wolverine, but we’ll get him for at least for one more movie. Everyone’s heads are exploding right now in a way that will surely please Deadpool.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman Address the Logan/Deadpool 3 Question

Wolverine in his dying moments from Logan.
20th Century Studios

We thought we saw the end of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in Logan. (As did director James Mangold.) But this is a comic book character we’re talking about, after all, which means a surprise return is not only possible, it’s expected.

We still have questions, though, about what the Greatest Adamantium Showman’s return in Deadpool 3 means for the “end” of his story. Fortunately, Reynolds and Jackman are here to help address them…in exactly the way you’d expect.

Ah, yes, that clears everything up. Logan takes place years after Deadpool 3, and they both really like Wham! (Who doesn’t!) Jackman also recently noted to Sirius XM’s Radio Andy program:

Because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines, now we can go back, because…it’s science. And so I don’t have to screw with the Logan timeline, which was important to me, and I think probably to the fans, too.

Sounds like potential time travel is in the works. And what’s that about a device? For that answer and for answers to questions about the multiverse, the existence of mutants in Earth-616, and the million other queries we have, we’ll just have to wait.

R-Rated Deadpool and Wolverine in the MCU

In previous, Feige noted he felt excited to bring a “very different type of character [to] the MCU.” And Deadpool certainly is that, but also, he isn’t. In many ways, Wade Wilson and Ryan Reynolds both make a lot of sense in the world of the MCU. The franchise has already been pushing the envelope with entries such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This is the logical next step. There are, after all, plenty of kid-friendly options to choose from among the MCU’s many, many movies. And with High Jackman and Wolverine in the mix for Deadpool 3, we can’t wait for what’s certainly in store for us. This will no doubt also be a Wolverine like we’ve never seen him before.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman sitting on a couch acting out a fight between Deadpool and Wolverine
Ryan Reynolds

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has appeared in an R-rated movie before. But we have a feeling Jackman’s Wolverine rendition in Logan and Deadpool 3 may feel a little different. Recently, Jackman shared more about what we could expect from the new MCU Wolverine. Will we see an angrier Logan or a gentler version of the character? Jackman responded with the obvious, saying:

“He’s definitely angrier, acerbic, grumpy, and he’s gonna take a lot of free shots at Ryan Reynolds, let me tell you… Physically, that is.” It definitely sounds like we’ll see a Wolverine that’s totally new. And that Deadpool better watch out. Reynolds recently confirmed this news, sharing with Variety, “What we pitched him was enough of a divergence from the character that he knows and the character that he’s left behind, that it gives him something completely new to play and something that he’s really excited to do.”

Additionally, Jackman recently offered more insight about the relationship between Deadpool and Wolverine in the MCU. He described the pair’s relationship to The Empire Film Podcast saying:

“10 being really close, zero being — that’s what we are, we are zero. We are opposites. Hate each other. He’s annoyed by him. Wants to be a million miles away from him or punch him in the head. So, unfortunately, he can’t be a million miles away from him in the movie, so I’m probably going to punch him in the head a lot… [They are] Polar opposites. He’s my vinegar to his sugar. He’s the fast-talking, quick-word loudmouth and my character just wants to punch him in the head.”

That’s a lot of punching, for sure.

Deadpool 3 and Phase 6 of the MCU

Jackman has said in previous that he won’t play Wolverine again and was retired from the role. But we guess the siren song of Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool, and the MCU called him back. He notes to Variety that he actually thought about it for a long time, but it took him longer to get onboard. In fact, Reynolds asked Jackman to come back as Wolverine for Deadpool 3 “on the daily” for approximately three years. And had nearly given up when Jackman finally agreed to return to the character.

As for Deadpool himself, we still don’t yet know if Deadpool will hail from a different multiverse in Deadpool 3 or if the move will explain he’s been kicking around the MCU all along, just out of sight. Either way, we are very happy to have him. And with Ryan Reynolds overseeing his long-time character, we’re confident he’s going to turn out just right. Not to mention, we can’t wait to see which of our MCU favs he (and now maybe Wolverine) eventually interact get to meet.

Deadpool 3‘s R-rated nature really does open the door to many new possibilities in the MCU. We wonder if Deadpool will remain a stand-alone R-rated arm, or whether other heroes will get to fight a little dirtier. We guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Deadpool 3, now with more Hugh Jackman Wolverine-fun, was slated to release on September 6, 2024. But now it will release on November 8, 2024. Although the MCU hasn’t said for sure, it could be that Deadpool 3 will kick off Phase 6 of the MCU, which begins with a “Fall 2024” release.

The Marvel Multiverse is about to crack open wide. And that means that at long last, mutants are coming to the MCU. We’ve had some X-Men hints already, but when Wade Wilson crashes into the MCU in Deadpool 3, he’ll be bringing Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine with him. And if we were to take Sir Patrick Stewart’s hints seriously, it seems Professor X and maybe even Magneto may also go along for the ride.

And honestly, with Avengers: Secret Wars coming up, we feel confident that we are getting one last hurrah for the Fox X-Men. We suspect their reality will be part of the eventual Battleworld in Secret Wars. And if it is, that means we are going to be getting some long-awaited Avengers vs. X-Men live-action rumbles. Heck, some may happen as soon as Deadpool 3. Here are the AvX fights we are dying to see play out on theater screens in the coming years.

The Hulk vs. Wolverine

The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in their respective cinematic universes.
Marvel Studios/20th Century Studios

If there’s one big “Avenger vs. X-Man” fight everyone on Earth wants to see, including Hugh Jackman and Mark Ruffalo, it’s the Hulk fighting Wolverine. In the pages of Marvel Comics, these two have a long-standing rivalry. In fact, Wolverine first appeared in the pages of Incredible Hulk, not in Uncanny X-Men. We just hope it’s classic, rampaging Hulk and not smart Professor Hulk. We want to see the most feral versions of Logan and the Jade Giant go toe-to-toe. This one needs to get ugly.

Iron Man vs. Magneto

Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, and Ian McKellen as Magneto.
Marvel Studios/20th Century Studios.

Yeah, we know, Tony Stark is very dead. But if we’re getting a Battleworld in Secret Wars, it means that some version of Iron Man will be around. Will it be Robert Downey Jr. as a variant? Maybe it will be Tom Cruise as “the Superior Iron Man” as was once rumored? Who knows? Regardless, we want to see the Man of Metal vs. the Master of Magnetism. It’s happened several times in the comics, with various outcomes. But the prospect of RDJ (hopefully) trading not only punches but sarcastic comments with either Sir Ian McKellen or Michael Fassbender has us salivating at the thought.

Captain Marvel vs. Rogue

Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in Avengers: Endgame, and Anna Paquin as Rogue in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Marvel Studios/20th Century Studios.

In the original Fox X-Men films, Anna Paquin’s power-absorbing Rogue was significantly less powerful than her comic book counterpart. A big reason why was that in the comics, Rogue was able to permanently steal a portion of Carol Danvers’ powers, allowing her permanent super strength and flight. With Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel now a major MCU player, we’d like to see Rogue take her on in a fight, and siphon some of her powers. Then, we’d have the two powerhouses actually have a real down n’ dirty battle. The ability for the X-Men and Avengers characters to share a screen now means this storyline can finally see live-action glory.

Scarlet Witch vs. Phoenix (Jean Grey)

Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch, and Famke Janssen as Jean Grey in X-Men: The Last Stand
Marvel Studios/20th Century Studios

The most powerful members of both the Avengers and the X-Men are a pair of women who, at their peak powers, can reshape all reality. Or, more pointedly, destroy it entirely. Jean Grey is the host of the cosmic Phoenix Force, while Wanda Maximoff is the prophesied Scarlet Witch. If these two do battle, everyone else shouldn’t just clear the room, they should clear the whole darn planet. If we see Famke Janssen finally unleash the Phoenix Force at her full potential at an equally powerful opponent like Wanda, we’re in line for this on day one. It would make up for the shoddy treatment Jean Grey received in both Dark Phoenix Saga adaptations.

Captain America vs. Cyclops

Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) as Captain America, and James Marsden as the X-Men's Cyclops.
Marvel Studios/20th Century Studios

Both the X-Men and the Avengers have had their share of leaders. But the quintessential field commanders of both teams were almost always Cyclops and Captain America. And whenever the two teams clashed, often the iconic image on the comic book cover was the sight of Scott Summers’ optic blasts ricocheting off Cap’s vibranium shield. We’re good seeing Scott take on either Cap, be it Sam Wilson or Steve Rogers. With the multiverse in play, anything is possible. Regardless of who Cap is, it would be nice for James Marsden to finally get to truly show off his skills as the iconic mutant hero.

Thor vs. Storm

Chris Hemsworth as Thor Odinson in Thor: Love and Thunder, and Halle Berry as Storm in X-Men: The Last Stand.
Marvel Studios/20th Century Studios

One is a Norse God of Thunder. The other is a mutant “weather witch.” Both wield the power of lightning. So yes, Thor vs. Storm has all the ingredients for an epic showdown. Sure, Thor has an advantage, being an immortal god and everything. Storm is a mortal mutant, despite being worshipped as a goddess by her African tribe. But we know Ororo Munroe would give Odinson a run for his money. In the comics, Storm even spent time on Asgard, and was bequeathed her own enchanted hammer, Stormcaster. So she’s not unfamiliar with their forms of combat. These are some sparks we can’t wait to see fly on screen. We’re sure both Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry would have a ball filming this fight.

Scarlet Witch vs. Magneto

Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch, and Ian McKellen as Magneto in X-Men.
Marvel Studios/20th Century Studios

In the comics, Magneto is the father of Wanda Maximoff. Well, most of the time. Marvel retcons have changed that fact occasionally. However, he definitely raised her from her teen years on. Yet due to rights issues, Wanda’s relationship with her mutant dad could not be acknowledged on screen. But with Disney now having rights to the X-Men characters free and clear, we want to see the Scarlet Witch encounter her deadbeat dad, and maybe even show the Master of Magnetism who the real power in the family is. As powerful as Magneto may be, his little girl might hand him his butt.

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch.

Deadpool 3 hits theaters on November 8, 2024. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars are currently set to release in 2025 and 2026.

Could DEADPOOL 3 Lead to Classic X-Men in AVENGERS: SECRET WARS? https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-3-wolverine-classic-x-men-avengers-secret-wars-possible-connection-kevin-feige-mcu/ Wed, 28 Sep 2022 14:34:34 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=928000 Logan and Wade Wilson are reuniting for Deadpool 3. But what if Logan's entry into the MCU leads to something bigger in Avengers: Secret Wars?

We’ve been waiting patiently for official word on Deadpool 3 for years now, wondering just what Ryan Reynolds’ first foray into the MCU would look like. We knew Shawn Levy was directing, but that’s it. Despite fans (and Reynolds himself) saying how badly he wanted Hugh Jackman to return to the role of Wolverine for the movie, Jackman kept insisting he was retired from the role. After Logan, he’d decided to hang up the claws. Well, turns out retirement lasts, oh, about five years. Because in a hilarious tweet, Reynolds revealed that Hugh Jackman is indeed returning as Wolverine for Deadpool 3, much to the delight of Marvel nerds everywhere.

But we think this grand return is an indication that Jackman won’t just be appearing in Deadpool 3 as Logan. We have a feeling this signals his appearance in Avengers: Secret Wars as well. And probably along with him, the rest of the original X-Men.

Deadpool 3 to Feature Zombie Wolverine? Probably Not

Marvel Studios is leaning hard into the Multiverse right now. Therefore, we don’t think that Jackman’s arrival means they are going to undo Wolverine’s death in Logan. As it stands, that movie felt disconnected and in its own universe, even from the original X-Men films. After all, the events of Logan don’t really line up with the restored future we saw at the end of Days of Future Past.

So with the Multiverse in play now, we think that Logan can remain its own thing. Whatever version of Wolverine we see in Deadpool 3 won’t be the same one who died in the 2017 film. They won’t dig him up and “bring him back to life,” so to speak. We think the integrity of James Mangold’s film is safe. A tweet from Mangold himself seems to imply that to him, his Logan is dead as a doornail.

A Deadpool and Wolverine Road Trip?!

Twentieth Century Films

In the past, Ryan Reynolds has said that his original plans for Deadpool 3 involved a “Rashomon style road trip with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.” We feel that is probably still the case, only with a Multiversal bent this time. John Krasinski’s “maybe joking/maybe not” tweet that followed the Deadpool 3 announcement seems to indicate it might be more than Wade and Logan on this trip. But we honestly believe that if Hugh Jackman is coming back, he’ll stick around for one more outing afterward. And bring his fellow X-Men with him.

Deadpool 3 Will Lead to an X-Men Reunion

Problematic director aside, the original X-Men films matter. Their success paved the way for Spider-Man and eventually, the entire MCU. And Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige himself has a bit of a sentimental soft spot for the first X-Men movies. They were his first on-screen credits in a Marvel film after all. They started him on the path that led him to become head of Marvel Studios.

So before the inevitable reboot of Marvel’s mutants (which may or may not be able to happen till after 2025 for contractual reasons, according to rumor), he might want to pay homage to the ones who started it all. And Secret Wars will come out in 2025, the 25th anniversary of the original X-Men film. Marketing loves a good anniversary tie-in. We doubt Disney could resist this one.

Deadpool 3: Prelude to Avengers: Secret Wars?

If the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars follows the comics in even the smallest way, it will see the introduction of Battleworld. In the comics, that was a patchwork planet made out of the remains of several realities. But each of those realities became slightly different (or sometimes very different) when merging into Battleworld. So one of those realities could be a version of the Fox X-Men universe. It doesn’t even have to follow the continuity (such as it is) of the Fox X-Men films, because they have recreated it as something new.

Patrick Stewart as Professor X. Professor X or Charles Xavier could return in the MCU.

Given all that, we could still get the original actors back in their roles. Meaning we could get a proper send-off for not only Hugh Jackman, but also Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, James Marsden, Famke Janssen, and Patrick Stewart. He recently returned to play Professor X in Multiverse of Madness, and has already said he’d be up to return. We think he knows something he’s not sharing with the rest of the class (of Xavier’s School).

Could We See Costumed X-Men at Long Last?

The main heroes from X-Men: The Animated Series.
Disney

Kevin Feige was one of the few true Marvel Comics fans on the set of X-Men, according to Hugh Jackman. In fact, Jackman has said in interviews that Feige snuck him Wolverine comics to his trailer, on the sly, as comic books were forbidden on set. And he also fixed Logan’s hair to be more comics-accurate. Now that he’s in charge of the whole enchilada, he probably can’t resist finally putting Jackman in a comics-accurate costume. And for that matter, the rest of the original X-Men as well. Imagine if we see the 2000s cast, flying into action as the X-Men: The Animated Series theme plays? We’re losing our minds over it already.

Now, maybe Jackman’s return to play Wolverine really is “one last time.” But given his comments in the past about how fun it would be to be part of the MCU someday, we have a feeling that Deadpool 3 is almost certainly not the end quite yet. And the X-Men might stand next to the Avengers and the FF before it’s all said and done.

Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds are reteaming yet again. Their latest collaboration, The Adam Project just hit Netflix and the pair are already up for their next great adventure. Featuring the Merc with a Mouth, no less. Levy is reportedly directing Deadpool 3. This is the third film for Levy and Reynolds, who first teamed together for the 20th Century film, Free Guy. Given the track record for this pairing, we now have very high hopes for Deadpool 3. (It’s Deadpool, so we were already mad hype, to be honest.)

According to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news, Bob’s Burgers writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin are penning the script. (Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote the first two Deadpool films.)

It’s been nearly four years since we last caught up with Wade Wilson. And we wondered when we’d see him again. Notably, this is the first Deadpool film since Disney acquired Fox—which included 20th Century Fox, Deadpool‘s studio home. The Venn diagram between the classic Disney brand and Deadpool are probably more akin to two circles drawn next to each other on a piece of paper. (Any overlap is strictly fan-based.) Famously, Disney has never released anything with an R-rating. And what is Deadpool if not fully basking in the R-rating?

But luckily, it sounds like Deadpool gets to keep its raunchy touch. Curiously, I wonder if it’ll fall under 20th Century Studios, the Disneyfied version of its predecessor studio. (That it shares a studio with the Ben Affleck movie Deep Water makes a hell of a lot more sense than bunking with live-action Dumbo.)

Deadpool looks shocked with his hands on his masked face

But with Deadpool officially back under the greater Disney umbrella, could it now be a Marvel Studios film? I, personally, would love to see Deadpool and Doctor Strange in a room together. It sounds like it would be pure chaos. If Deadpool is (probably) back-flipping over to the MCU, how long must we wait for the previous two films to flee Hulu for Disney+? Certainly not before March 16, when they can be fully locked under the streaming platform’s new parental controls.

Deadpool 3 doesn’t have a release date yet—and we still don’t know who from the cast is joining Ryan Reynolds. But we’re on the lookout and will update with more details soon.

Deadpool Makes His First MCU Appearance Alongside Korg… for FREE GUY https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-korg-free-guy-reaction-mcu/ Tue, 13 Jul 2021 18:46:51 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=824984 Deadpool finally met his first character from the MCU. In perhaps the most unexpected way imaginable, as a reaction video to a Ryan Reynolds movie.

Ever since Disney bought Fox, people have been wondering just when the heck Deadpool 3 was coming. Or, in other words, when the heck Deadpool was officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Well, in a very unexpected way, he just has. In a new promotion for the upcoming Ryan Reynolds movie Free Guy, Thor: Ragnarok favorite Korg joins the Merc with the Mouth for the first MCU/Deadpool crossover.

Together, the two make a “reaction video” parody video, where they watch the trailer for the movie, and snarkily comment along. You can watch the full hilarious Free Guy “reaction video,” featuring the voices of Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi, right here.

And here, we all thought that Pietro in WandaVision was going to be the first X-Men universe/MCU crossover. But nope, it was this promo video for a non-Marvel based film. So of all the MCU characters who could have interacted with Deadpool first, why Korg? Well, the voice of Korg, Taika Waititi is actually in Free Guy. So that’s your answer right there.

In his trademark fashion, Deadpool finds a way to mock not just the movie he’s there to promote, but also the recent success of the MCU on Disney+.  He even takes shots at Deadpool 2. And he cracks a joke that Free Guy is just something leftover from a “fire sale” after Disney bought 20th Century Studios from Fox. Ouch. There might be a little truth to that wisecrack. It still looks like a fun movie regardless of said Fire Sale though.

Deadpool and Korg "react" to the Free Guy trailer.

Disney

In any event, this actually makes us long for an official Deadpool/Korg meeting on the big screen. At some point, Deadpool 3 is going to be a reality. Why not team him up with a bunch of random minor characters from the MCU? Korg can be there. Maybe resurrect the Warriors Three from the Thor franchise. They really deserved better.

Free Guy hits theaters exclusively on August 13.

DEADPOOL 3 Hires BOB’S BURGERS Writers https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-3-hires-bobs-burgers-writers/ Fri, 20 Nov 2020 19:56:38 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=769572 After months of waiting, it seems we have official movement of a potential third Deadpool movie at last. The Marvel movie has hired writers.

We all knew that the one Marvel Comics property that would likely survive the Disney acquisition of 20th Century Studios was going to be Deadpool. That’s just what happens when the first two movies make nearly a billion dollars each. But aside from a post from star Ryan Reynolds visiting the Marvel Studios office over a year ago, we haven’t heard anything about a potential Deadpool 3 in some time.

According to Deadline, movement is finally happening. They’re reporting that Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin have been hired to write the screenplay. The Molyneux sisters made a name for themselves as executive producers and writers for the animated hit Bob’s Burgers. This would be the first Deadpool movie without writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese attached.

Deadpool stands with his guns

20th Century Studios

The original report suggests Deadpool 2‘s director, David Leitch, is unlikely to return. This has more to do with his schedule being tied up with other projects in 2021 than anything else. If things change though—a likely scenario in a pandemic world—an offer to Leitch could still happen. Or maybe Deadpool is just one of those franchises that winds up having a different director each time, the only constant being Ryan Reynolds.

We have ton of questions about the third Deadpool movie. Will it stay R-rated under the Marvel Studios banner? For that matter, will Wade Wilson actually join the MCU. Or will he stay in his own weird corner of the Marvel cinematic multiverse? And speaking of multiverses, what are the odds that Deadpool winds up in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness? One thing’s for sure: given how immensely popular the character is, expect Deadpool to have a long cinematic life under Marvel boss Kevin Feige. It’s just a question of what it will all look like.
